The current Onena is possibly the oldest industrial company in Navarre that is still operating. A descendant of the original paper pulp factory created in 1846 by the widow of Francisco Ribed in Villava, it adopted its present name "Onena Bolsas de Papel, S.A.", in 1920 while it was the property of the Papelera Española, S.A. group, which sold 80% of its capital in 1988 to the US company Continental Can Company Inc. (CCC).
Its activity is the manufacture of printed flexible packaging covering a wide range of products, mainly for the food and drink sector.
SODENA took a 40% stake in the company's capital in 1994, when it absorbed Industrias Gomáriz in Ibiricu de Egüés, and moved its installations in Villava to Ibiricu de Egüés.
In 1997, as a result of the exit of CCC from the company, SODENA acquired 100% of the capital and started the process of privatisation of Onena.
This process was completed in 2001 when SODENA exited from Onena’s capital through the gradual sale of its stake to sector entrepreneurs. This left the company in a consolidated situation of profits after five years of continued losses, annual turnover of 18 million euros and 125 employees.
